1. Our Approach to Children’s Privacy

Coorabook is a general-audience book discovery and library-management service intended for users who are at least 13 years old.

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13.

Children under 13 are not permitted to create an account or use the App, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

We seek to comply with applicable children’s privacy laws, including the United States Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, where applicable.

2. Age Requirements

A user must be at least 13 years old to create a Coorabook account or use the App.

Parents and guardians should not permit a child under 13 to:

  • Create a Coorabook account

  • Use another person’s Coorabook account

  • Submit personal information through the App

  • Upload a profile photo

  • Use the book-scanning feature

Users between the ages of 13 and the age of legal majority should use the Service with appropriate guidance from a parent or guardian where required by applicable law.

3. Information Relating to Children Under 13

We do not knowingly request or collect personal information from children under 13.

Coorabook accounts are intended to be created and managed only by users who meet the minimum age requirement.

If we discover that a child under 13 has created an account or provided personal information without legally valid authorization, we will take reasonable steps to:

  • Restrict or close the account

  • Stop further processing of the information

  • Delete the child’s personal information

  • Delete associated library and profile information

Deletion will be completed as soon as reasonably practicable and normally within 30 days, unless limited retention is required by law, security obligations, fraud prevention, or another lawful purpose.

4. Book Scanning and Temporary Image Processing

Coorabook allows eligible users to scan book covers using the device camera.

When a book cover is scanned:

  1. The captured image is temporarily uploaded to Google Firebase Cloud Storage.

  2. Google Cloud Vision accesses the temporarily stored image through a Firebase URL.

  3. Optical character recognition, or OCR, extracts book-related text such as the title, author name, or ISBN.

  4. The captured image is automatically deleted immediately after OCR processing is completed.

Captured book-cover images are not permanently stored by Coora Labs Inc.

Captured images are not:

  • Sent to OpenAI

  • Used for advertising

  • Used for behavioral or advertising profiling

  • Added to the user’s permanent library

  • Used for purposes unrelated to identifying the book

Users must not scan documents or images containing personal information unrelated to book identification.

5. AI and Automated Processing

Some Coorabook features use automated technologies and third-party artificial intelligence services, including the OpenAI API.

Depending on the feature, limited book-related information may be sent to OpenAI, including:

  • Text extracted from a scanned book cover

  • Book title

  • Author name

  • ISBN

  • Book description

  • Publication details or other book metadata

This information may be processed to:

  • Organize or correct book information

  • Generate estimated recommended age ranges

  • Generate estimated grade levels

  • Generate estimated Lexile® levels

  • Identify series information

  • Generate related-book recommendations

  • Improve the presentation of book information

Coorabook does not intentionally send the following information to OpenAI:

  • Email addresses

  • Profile photos

  • User account IDs

  • Passwords or authentication credentials

  • A user’s complete personal library

  • Captured book-cover images

  • Personal information unrelated to the requested book feature

These automated systems are not intended to identify, profile, or target children under 13.

AI-generated information may be incorrect, incomplete, or unsuitable for a particular reader. Parents, guardians, educators, and users should independently evaluate automated reading-level or age-range estimates.

Estimated Lexile® levels provided by Coorabook are not official Lexile® measures.

Lexile® is a registered trademark of MetaMetrics, Inc. Coorabook and Coora Labs Inc. are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by MetaMetrics, Inc.
